Startup 4 Climate is one of Europe’s biggest innovation challenges, targeting young companies with ideas that can accelerate the energy transition. Startup 4 Climate is one of our most urgent initiatives to date, as we seek to limit global warming to 1,5 degrees.

This is your chance to contribute to this year’s competition. Below, you will find all the contestants along with a short description of their innovations. The contestant who receives the most votes will secure a spot on the finalist shortlist and will get to pitch their idea to the jury at the grand finale on November 10th.

Sunsurf Solar

Sunsurf Solar builds modular floating solar systems for water surfaces, industrial ponds, reservoirs and retention basins. Solar no longer has to compete with farmland or forests for space. Our mooring system lets any site with open water, from golf courses to waste management plants, host a solar park without access to land. Floating panels also run 10-15% more efficiently than rooftop solar thanks to natural water cooling, and reduce evaporation. Founded in Gothenburg by a naval architecture, ocean engineering and environmental science team, we’re moving from prototype to first commercial installs, with 600+ active sales opportunities and SEK 5.9M signed so far.

Self heating Biodigester

MatrixShift Research & Innovation AB introduces Autonomous On-Site Biogas Production. I independently discovered that when algae converts to biogas, 100% of nutrients recycle infinitely. While I later learned this loop existed in scientific theory, it remains completely useless without a precise thermal environment. My patent-pending, self-heating biodigester is the first and only autonomous hardware capable of executing this profitably indoors. It physically unlocks this theoretical cycle, allowing facilities to generate combustion-free energy from CO2. Backed by PRV-confirmed novelty on 14 claims, I hold the key to the ultimate climate engine—and I am ready to unleash it.

Magnet Rides

With Magnet Rides’ ridesharing app, you can go anywhere without a car with BankID-verified drivers. When there is no bus or even a taxi available, you will always have our app and available private drivers. Our secret is an encrypted P2P chat that enables legal, direct cost-sharing on the drivers’ own terms. At EUR 3/month, the subscription is so affordable that anyone can try it and get hooked after a free first month. By adding conversational AI, we easily catch attention and attract both early adopters and the visually impaired. Magnet Rides will seriously reduce unnecessary driving and solo trips, and can reduce CO₂ emissions in Sweden by 8 million tons per year, leaving no one behind.

Unibloom

Companies and consumers need reliable emissions data to make lower-carbon choices, but out of the countless materials and products driving the global economy, verified climate databases cover only a small fraction. Suitable data are often missing while lifecycle assessments remain slow and complex. Unibloom is developing an AI-powered climate data engine that predicts missing emission data and automatically builds lifecycle assessments across materials, production and transport. The resulting decision-ready climate insights can help businesses compare products, suppliers and processes, and create the foundation for consumers to understand the climate impact of their purchasing decisions.

Solfolket

Solfolket is building an energy company for the new energy economy. We help housing associations and commercial properties maximize the value of every kWh across electricity, district heating, production and storage. By combining software, energy services and property-specific optimization hardware, batteries and solar PV, we optimize costs and emissions in real time. With the right incentives for property owners and sub-metered tenants, we unlock profitable flexibility, increase renewable energy use and reduce grid strain.

Caplyzer

Caplyzer is a deeptech startup with a patented membrane-free electrolyzer for green hydrogen production, built to decarbonize heavy industries. As power systems go renewable, electricity is getting cheap but intermittent creating a mismatch between conventional electrolyzers and market needs.

Caplyzer solves this structurally. Unlike conventional technology, we never produce hydrogen and oxygen at the same time. This removes the need for expensive membranes and rare-earth metals, making us 30% cheaper, inherently safer, and fully compatible with intermittent power – without battery buffers.

Korall

Korall develops Direct Air Capture technology that removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere. Our liquid-based process is designed for tough climates and uses low-grade industrial waste heat together with electricity to power the process. We aim to provide energy companies and industrial operators with scalable systems that turn available clean energy and waste heat into permanent carbon removal and renewable fuels, enabling a future where hard-to-abate emissions can be balanced by removing CO2 from the air.

Cement Recycle BHA

Cement is the backbone of modern construction – and one of the world’s largest industrial CO₂ sources. Cement Recycle BHA turns demolition concrete waste into ARCF (Activated Recycled Cement Fines), a clinker replacement produced through mechanochemical activation in our proprietary dual-speed mill – at room temperature, with no kilns and no calcination. The result: up to 80% lower CO₂, at a fraction of the cost of virgin cement. And unlike competing substitutes, which depend on waste from the steel or coal industries, our raw material exists wherever buildings are demolished – a truly geographically independent solution. Lab-validated (TRL 4), now scaling towards pilot.

Planboo

Planboo is the measurement and verification layer for biochar carbon removal. Like a smart meter authenticates every electron on the grid, MRVin authenticates every tonne of CO2 permanently removed from the atmosphere. Our software platform (MRVin Monitor) connects to embedded IoT sensors at pyrolysis kilns, validates production data through AI-powered dMRV, and issues registry-certified carbon removal certificates. We rank number 10 globally for durable CDR delivered (CDR.fyi, end 2025): 31,575 tonnes delivered, over 43,000 verified credits brokered via MRVin, 20 producers across 13 countries, MRVin SaaS up 152% year-on-year.

QuantSens

Our sensors sensitivity is 1000x more than commerciable available electrochemical hydrogen sensors.
We can use the sensors electrical signal output at 500 ppb to calibrate and compensate for if any drift. Other electrochemical alarms need time consuming regularly and manually calibrations.

Digital underground utility location

Every hour an underground cable or pipe is damaged in Sweden, costing SEK 12 billion a year. To prevent this, these utilities are marked with paint on the ground before digging, called utility locating. It is done manually, requiring 500,000 car trips a year. Unfortunately, in half of all utility strikes it does not help.

We’ve digitized cable locating. Excavators and field instruments read the utility network map directly into their systems. Response time: minutes, not weeks. A feedback loop from the field corrects the map whenever an error is found – the more it’s used, the better it gets.

24 energy grid companies and contractors are already building and testing the solution with us.

Modvion

Modvion builds wind turbine towers from engineered wood. Above roughly 100 metres a steel tower’s base becomes too wide for public roads, so tower height, and therefore the energy a site can produce is capped by logistics rather than by engineering. Our patented modular design removes that cap: laminated veneer lumber modules travel on ordinary trucks and are joined on site, up to 200+ metre hub heights. LVL is 40% stronger than steel per kilo, making our towers around 30% lighter, and the wood stores more carbon than the tower emits to produce. A 105-metre wooden tower has been carrying a Vestas turbine since 2024. Serial production starts in Trollhättan in 2028.

Nordic SeaFarm

The ocean is one of the world’s largest untapped resources for sustainable biomass, yet seaweed cultivation remains too expensive and labour-intensive for large-scale industrial use. We are developing a next-generation cultivation platform that combines automation, mechanisation and offshore farming to dramatically increase productivity and reduce costs. By making marine biomass scalable, we can unlock seaweed as a renewable raw material for biomaterials, chemicals and other industries seeking alternatives to fossil-based resources. Our vision is to help build the ocean-based bioeconomy needed for a climate-positive future.

SeaPattern

SeaPattern unlocks more clean electricity from hydropower plants that already exist. Harads Biocarbon

Heavy industry still needs carbon, but it does not have to come from fossil coal. Harads Arctic Heat produces biocarbon for industrial processes, using locally sourced biomass today. We have built and operate our own plant and delivered biocarbon to customers including SSAB, LKAB, Ovako and Boliden. In 2027, we plan to extend this proven platform and produce biocarbon from textile waste, helping both the textile and steel industries reduce emissions and use resources more circularly.

Peak Energy

Peak Energy is building an Energy Decision Platform that helps companies make better decisions about energy-intensive sites and distributed assets. The platform combines grid tariffs, energy prices, consumption data and flexibility-market opportunities to analyse costs, simulate new sites and identify potential revenues. Capacity Optimizer

Reuse and recycling are two direct positive impact actions as a result of the app we have built. Our own research based emissions engine uses machine learning to classify each task and estimate avoided GHG emissions in CO₂e. In app competitions, visible impact and community rewards make sustainable behavior simple and fun.

LOCOMS

Plastic waste causes 5% of global CO₂ emissions. Our reactor converts dirty, mixed plastic waste into circular feedstock using our patent-pending, AI-driven electromagnetic reactor. Current systems can’t adapt to feedstock changes, creating unreliable output. Ours does: electromagnetic control is instant, our AI reads and adjusts the reaction, holding consistent output where chemical recycling always struggles. We scale by adding cheap units, an SMR-inspired approach, killing capex and scale-up risk. Easily installed near waste sources, enabling decentralized, resilient local production. Just plastic waste, turned into circular feedstock replacing fossil oil, without green a premium.

REBATTEX

REBATTEX is building Europe’s trusted exchange and compliance infrastructure for EV batteries. As growing volumes of batteries enter repair, reuse, repurpose and recycling markets, the industry faces challenges around traceability, battery health, compliance, logistics and trusted transactions. REBATTEX connects dismantlers, workshops, insurers, OEMs, refurbishers and energy storage companies through a platform combining battery intelligence, compliance and secure transactions – enabling a circular battery economy that extends battery life, retains valuable materials, reduces unnecessary mineral extraction, and strengthens Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy.

Endofwaste by Reparell

EndOfWaste turns degraded PET that industry currently writes off as waste into specification-ready industrial polymer. Using thermomechanical processing and tailored chain extenders, we restore material performance instead of producing a lower-grade recycled output. The process has already been validated in industrial equipment using 50 kg of real PET waste collected in Kukës, Albania. Our next step is a 10-ton on-site pilot. We sell application-ready polymer at prevailing market prices and scale through modular, partner-operated units located close to suitable waste streams and industrial customers—creating a globally replicable alternative to fossil virgin PET.

Smart Vacuum Pressing

Pulp & paper mills waste €100B in energy every year, and half goes to one step: drying. Occzendo has patented Smart Vacuum Pressing (SVP), which removes far more water before the dryer, cutting drying energy 10–20% while simultaneously increasing production capacity 10–20% — a trade-off no existing press technology has solved. All four global tier-1 press OEMs (Voith, Valmet, Andritz, Bellmer) are actively engaged. We license our patented IP rather than build machinery — no factories, no inventory. Raising SEK 5M pre-seed to run our industrial pilot toward first commercial deployment by 2028/29.

KulVue

Buildings are overheating as the climate warms, yet replacing windows is expensive and resource intensive. Duck Technologies has developed KulVue®, a transparent coating that upgrades existing windows to block solar heat, reduce cooling energy use, and improve indoor comfort—making buildings more climate-resilient at scale.

DREV

The energy transition depends on batteries, yet every cell hides a problem: tons of hazardous yet valuable microparticles escape during materials production, cell manufacturing and recycling, spreading through factories and becoming diffuse waste. Based on firsthand gigafactory experience, DREV’s patented Vault systems combine sealed capture, segregation and digital traceability to recover particles at source and from production surfaces. Building on industrial results, DREV targets major reductions in particle exposure, water use and production losses while increasing recovery and traceability of critical materials—making the battery value chain safer, cleaner, more circular and resilient.

Codaria

Industrial machines waste huge amounts of energy and material operating in degraded states before failures are detected. Predictive maintenance can prevent this, but high costs limit its adoption to large manufacturers who can afford it.

Codaria changes that: a software-generation platform that turns an expert-built predictive model into a complete, deployable maintenance system, using data manufacturers already have. This makes predictive maintenance available to every manufacturer: one machine is as feasible to address as a fleet. Deployed across just five industrial facilities, this could recover 100-125 GWh a year, enough to power 50,000 homes, cutting energy waste and carbon emissions.

UNURY - Urban NUtrition RecoverY

We use energy to manufacture fertilizer while cities flush fertilizer nutrients away. Our solution connects the two. At around 4 kg of nitrogen per person per year, 100,000 people could provide roughly 320 tonnes of recovered nitrogen – enough to fertilize around 1,800 hectares of winter wheat, with the potential to support production of around 14,000 tonnes of grain. Urban Nutrient Recovery as a Service turns an urban waste stream into a local agricultural resource – and a scalable business.

SparePartners

SparePartners is a digital spare parts network. Instead of every company building its own costly, static spare parts inventory, connected companies can share, search for, and buy or sell spare parts in real time. This reduces unplanned downtime, frees up capital tied up in stock, keeps ageing machinery running longer, and means fewer new parts need to be manufactured and transported. SparePartners strengthens competitiveness and crisis preparedness across Swedish industry and the energy sector — from automotive to the power grid — while using resources smarter and cutting waste.

Conpressor

We provide a new compressor technology to increase energy efficiency at lower cost in relation to present technologies.

The technology is based on the principle of an endless piston movement and was developed by an inventor in Dalarna, Sweden. The technology using few parts and only rotational movement has been validated for general compressors in a recent study. Now we are developing further prototypes to validate in relation to specific needs in various applications.

Next step is to seek cooperation with industry partners for further implementation of the technology in various applications

Fastighetsanalys

In 1973 came the last real oil crisis. I had bought a villa of 300 m2. Rationing of oil sales by 25% was discussed. I found out that the previous owner had used up 8.6 m3 of oil. I took all the simple measures. Cleaned the oil boiler and changed the oil burner. Shunted manually for 1 year because there was no shunt valve. Oil consumption went down to 4.3 m3 after 1 year. Calculated with the help of 15 “authorized” calculation programs that the house should draw 6 to 8.5 m3. Made a new program that gave the result 4.3 m3! This became the basis for the success of my life!

TRUCTRIC

We provide transport buyers a cost efficient and sustainable alternative to long distance fossil trucking, by making combined transportation on road and rail competitive and accessible to all.
With our concept for horizontal loading of trailers, using precision driving assisted by software and sensors, seamless integration of trucking and rail freight is enabled – physically as well as digitally.
We are presently developing this technology with partners targeting a first pilot 2027 and first launch 2028.

TSO Link

AI is driving an unprecedented data center build-out, and grid capacity is what limits it. Svenska kraftnät received roughly 9,000 MW of new connection applications in 2025, and about half came from data centers. Every one of those sites already holds backup power that sits idle almost all the time. It cannot simply be handed to the grid, because it is there to protect uptime. This is the tension TSO Link solves. tsoBOX activates the assets on site, tsoCLOUD aggregates and trades them, and redundancy stays intact. AI infrastructure and the energy transition then grow together instead of at each other’s expense.

ARES

We assist municipalities and public actors in fighting eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HAB). The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD; 2000/60/EC) demands all water to reach good ecological and chemical status by 2027. But public actors are still lacking the tools to remove excess nutrients from their waters, and have no tools whatsoever to combat HAB:s.

ARES solves both problems with one solution. Our systems filters and harvests microalgae from public waters. By removing algae we remove nutrients and stop active HAB:s. Thereby the ecological status is improved, the public waters stay open and we produce a valuable biomass.

AmmoniQ

We make ammonia using only air, water and electricity, In the same process we also produce steam under pressure. Our solution is localized and scalable. And the demand is global.

Elmätartolk

Electricity meters have a measurement signal output for instant reading of kWh and kW. The idea is to log these data, interpret it, and figure out what different consumers are. The module saves the data as a running bar graph with a reading per minute on a timeline with different colors for different identified consumers. The module sends alarms if the consumption patterns deviates from normal. Since the data reading is done in real time it is also possible to run different loads and simultaneously read their different consumptions. Which in its turn makes the data easy to understand and also makes it easy to pinpoint which load that have a defect (such as a worn out bearing in a motor).

Sliprox

We produce and sell railway sleepers made from 100% recycled plastics.

The problem: currently sleepers are made out of creosote treated wood, which is being phased out across the EU due to it being carcinogenic, and concrete, which is an energyintensive process to produce and overall much worse than if you use recycled plastics. In Sweden alone over 200 000 creosote treated wooden sleepers are replaced every year.

Today’s electric machines rely heavily on rare earth metals and either large gearboxes or complex, expensive manufacturing. We’ve invented a new patent-pending electric hybrid flux machine, that combines two existing designs to use the magnetic field more efficiently. Compared to the nearest competitor, it saves weight and volume while cutting copper and rare earth material use by up to 50%, without compromising performance. Our goal is to eliminate rare earth metals entirely. Developed by two Chalmers Formula Student engineers, it’s simple and cheap to manufacture, easily recyclable, and eliminates the need for a gearbox, increasing system efficiency by up to 5%.

Hello there! We’re Solstice Storage, and we’re decarbonising industrial heat, and making it resilient along the way. Industrial heat is the biggest slice of global CO₂ emissions that nobody has solved… yet.

We capture solar heat, store it in sand, and deliver process heat up to 1000°C. The trick is that we never convert the energy to electricity and back again. That round trip throws away 50–70% of it. Our heat transfer device lets us stay thermal the whole way, and that’s why we can beat gas on price at €34/MWh.

The technology came out of Lund University, the transfer device is patent pending, and in November we are building our pilot at a Orkla factory in Malmö.

Have you ever stood at a sink waiting for hot water and wondered why? We have! In many buildings, taps connect to a hidden network of pipes, heaters and circulation pumps that keep water hot around the clock, whether it is used or not. Beyond the wait, this wastes energy and water and can increase risks such as Legionella. Vyse tech has developed a system that heats water directly at the washbasin, exactly and ONLY when needed. Reference cases indicate over 90% lower energy use and over 70% lower water use. Twelve units are being verified with property owners, certification is underway, and IKEA named us Everyday Improver of the Year. We aim to make on-demand hot water the new standard.

Wattstep

Everything is going electric, but motors haven’t changed much. Most still use radial flux, a century old design. Ten years ago axial flux motors arrived, with the magnetic field running along the shaft instead of around it. That means less material, less weight, and more power for the same size. But a decade on, they’re still only found in supercars and other luxury segments because they cost too much. Wattstep has designed a new axial flux motor at half the price of today’s market leaders, with the same performance. Our motors also use rare earth magnets with a much smaller mining footprint than the heavy types found in most motors.

Suncooler

The Suncooler project aims to develop a cost-efficient cooling solution for new and existing solar panels. In addition, the thermal energy can be redirected elsewhere, where it can be put to use.

When a normal solar panel gets hot it will produce less power (about 5-15%) and heat also shortens its lifetime to some degree. Our cooling solution will improve both issues and will be most efficient if combined with a heat pump or a borehole as its cold source.

People need both electric and thermal energy. Our solution can supply both and the energy produced is free from the sun and its locally produced which minimize energy transport looses. Probably the cleanest energy in the world?

Superstate is developing a modular process that uses renewable electricity, nitrogen from air and water to produce green ammonia locally. Sea Technology has developed the Sea Tech Floating Terminal (The STFT™), a modular offshore terminal that lets the world’s largest container vessels transship directly to regional feeder ships. By adding port capacity at sea, The STFT can reduce congestion and waiting times while avoiding extensive land reclamation and major dredging. The concept combines efficient ocean shipping with short-sea distribution and is designed for future integration with clean energy. DNV (Det Norske Veritas) has reviewed the concept and issued an initial Approval in Principle, the first floating transshipment terminal of this size to receive an AiP.
